Next-Generation iPad with A5 Processor, 512MB RAM , and iOS 5 to be Announced at March 2nd Event
February 24, 2011 at 8:50 PM

Ahead of what is believed to be the introduction of the next-generation iPad at next week's March 2nd event, Engadget is reporting that Apple changed the plans of the iPad at the last minute. That is, Apple decided to pull the high resolution display, and SD card slot from unit production. Notably, that SD card [...]

Sources: iPad 2 lands in thinner body with spec bump and cameras, SD slot and higher resolution display are out
February 24, 2011 at 5:11 PM

The Apple rumors game can be a volatile thing. Just as we'd heard about last minute alterations to the Apple TV before it hit the market, we've gotten word from sources that the iPad 2 slated to be announced next Wednesday will be sans a few of the features we'd previously reported. Notably, that SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour. It's worth noting once again that these sources have been dead right on specific Apple plans and specifications for unannounced products in the past, and we have no reason to believe these changes are due to anything more than legitimate engineering decisions made close to launch.

So what will we see on March 2nd? We're hearing it's most likely a thinner, spec-bumped variation of the original iPad with a screen size and resolution identical to the current model. More RAM (512MB) and a more powerful CPU (the A5) are expected as well. It's also a pretty safe bet the tablet will be sporting at least one camera up front–though if some of those case mockups we've seen tell us anything, expect a shooter around back too. It's also almost guaranteed that we'll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple's cloud services (that part is a little... foggy right now). Of course, that will perfectly set up Apple's announcement of the iPhone 5 in June, which is when iPad owners can likely expect to be using the new software. Regardless, we'll have the goods come next week, so stay tuned!

Apple's announcement timing is uncanny
February 24, 2011 at 5:00 PM

<p> </p> <p style="text-align:center;"> <img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tuaw.com/media/2011/02/march2inviteapple.jpg" style="border-width:0px;border-style:solid;margin:8px;"/></p> <p> Tony Bradley at Macworld <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.macworld.com/article/158117/2011/02/appleevent_xoom.html#lsrc.rss_main">points out something interesting</a> that I've also been thinking about: Apple is being awfully sneaky with its timing when it comes to product announcements.</p> <p> <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/23/march-2-apple-event-confirmed-revised-ipad-anticipated/">The upcoming March 2 event</a> happens to land not only right around the time that <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/motorola-xoom-review/">Motorola's much-anticipated Xoom tablet</a> will hit consumers' hands, but also right in the middle of next week's Game Developers Conference, when quite a few developers will be announcing new games for both the iPad and Android tablet platforms. The timing seems more than coincidental, especially with all of the announcements we've seen today.</p> <p> And this isn't the only recent Apple announcement apparently targeted at shaking things up: The Mac App Store's launch date was set for January 6, right as this year's <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/CES/">CES</a> was underway in Las Vegas, and much of that show's sidetalk was taken up by rumors of the Verizon iPhone, which was <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/11/verizon-confirms-the-iphone-with-mobile-hotspot/">announced a few days later</a> on the 11th.</p> <p> You could argue that this is just good business, and you'd be right–with its keynote events, Apple is the uncontested leader in product messaging for tech, and timing is a big part of that. If Apple is going to announce an iPad 2, why <em>wouldn't</em> it be right when everyone's focused on tablet software? (Not to mention that the event is being held at Yerba Buena, right next door to the convention center). But at the same time, it's quite a coup, hijacking the attention of press and developers without any official involvement in the event they're there to attend.</p><p style="padding:5px;clear:both;"><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/24/apples-announcement-timing-is-uncanny/">Apple's announcement timing is uncanny</a> originally appeared on <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com">TUAW</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. DropPhox wirelessly connects your iOS camera with Dropbox
February 24, 2011 at 1:30 PM

DropPhox (US$1.99) from DaVinciWare Inc. is a little gem that everyone using an iOS device with a camera (and Dropbox) should go out and buy. This app allows you to snap pictures or videos, and have them wirelessly transfer to your Dropbox account via either 3G or Wi-Fi. We love Dropbox around here and use it for just about everything.

The first thing you'll do is link DropPhox to your Dropbox account. By default a folder will be created in Dropbox–named, not surprisingly DropPhox, but you can change it if you'd like. Once you take a picture, if there is a connection, the pictures or videos will transfer. If no connection exists, transfer will be put on hold and resume as soon as DropPhox detects one. That's it. It works seamlessly, perfectly and every time.

There are a number of things you can set either in DropPhox, or in the Settings app to tailor things to your liking. The first one is the size of the image. I don't have an iPhone 4, but on my 3GS, I can choose between, original, 1200x600, 960x1280, or 600x800. This is important, since an original resolution shot can be over 3 MB large, and sometimes you don't need the higher resolution image in Dropbox. In the Settings app, there are also options to enable or disable saving to your camera roll, choose a date format (all the shots are named starting with the date, so this may come in handy) and a few other settings. In the DropPhox app, you can provide the needed Dropbox settings, select a saving directory and turn Geotagging on or off.

Lion Server to be bundled with Mac OS X Lion
February 24, 2011 at 9:15 AM

Mac OS X Lion includes server

Today, Apple announced that Mac OS X Lion will include software that previously cost IT departments an extra $499: Mac OS X Lion Server.

"Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion," says Apple's marketing web page. "It's easy to set up your Mac as a server and take advantage of the many services Lion Server has to offer."

Some advantages of the newly integrated suite of server administrative software include a guided setup process for configuring a Mac as a server; "local and remote administration - for users and groups, push notifications, file sharing, calendaring, mail, contacts, chat, Time Machine, VPN, web, and wiki services - all in one place"; "simple, profile-based setup and management for Mac OS X Lion, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices" with Profile Manager; Wiki Server 3, designed to make it "even easier to collaborate, share, and exchange information"; and WebDAV services that give iPad users "the ability to [wirelessly] access, copy, and share documents on the server from applications such as Keynote, Numbers, and Pages."

The built-in server software joins a long list of new features planned for inclusion in Mac OS X Lion, including Launchpad, full-screen apps, Mission Control, new gestures, global auto save, Versions, Resume, and AirDrop. According to Apple's documentation for developers, Lion Server will appear as a customizable option during the initial installation process.

Mac OS X Lion is available as a developer preview today. It is scheduled for release this summer.

Ohio Girl Scouts accepting mobile payments for cookies, your thin mint craving starts now
February 24, 2011 at 8:14 AM

Short on cash but wishing you could stock up on Girl Scout cookies? Then you no longer have an excuse–at least if you're in Northeast Ohio–and as the local Girl Scout group there has teamed up with Intuit to accept credit cards using the company's GoPayment app (and accompanying card reader) for iOS and Android. What's more, while the Ohio group is the first to sign up, Intuit is now also extending the same offer (which includes reduced transaction fees) to Girl Scout organizations across the US–something tells us it won't have much trouble getting attracting interest.

CDMA iPhone 4 may land on China Telecom in June
February 24, 2011 at 7:00 AM

Chinese news sites are reporting that China Telecom has overcome technical challenges with the CDMA iPhone 4 and is prepared to launch the handset as early as June. Details were sparse but engineers have reportedly developed a workaround for the lack of a SIM slot in the CDMA iPhone 4.

Available from Verizon Wireless, the CDMA iPhone does not support a SIM card because the U.S. wireless carrier does not use the cellular technology in its handsets. China Telecom requires a SIM card, which poses a problem with the CDMA iPhone 4. As proof of their achievement, China Telecom employees in the Guangdong branch have posted pictures of the CDMA iPhone 4 with full 3G signal on China Telecom's network.

Previous posting from this Guangdong group boast that the iPhone 4 has made its first official phone call on China's #3 wireless carrier. The Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the government of the People's Republic of China, reiterates this report and suggests the CDMA iPhone will be available in June. Much of this information is obtained from unofficial sources and China Telecom has not commented on these rumors, though the carrier has indicated in the past it is interested in carrying the CDMA iPhone 4.

Apple is interested in the Chinese market and is expecting to open up to 25 new stores in China over the next several years. Apple is reportedly looking to open a new store on Shanghai's very popular and very busy Nanjing Road. This retail outlet will become China's fifth Apple store and will be the largest one in China thus far.

Girl Scouts using iPhones to sell cookies now
February 24, 2011 at 4:00 AM

Bad news: the Girl Scouts have discovered an easier way to sell you those dangerously delicious cookies, and it's through an iPhone. Starting this year, the Girl Scouts of America will be taking payments for their annual cookie sales through Intuit's GoPayment app, available on iOS. That means that if you fall apart and give in to that Samoa craving at the grocery store when the little girls keep bugging you, you could see your credit card information punched straight into Apple's handheld. The organization is getting a break from Intuit on the credit card fees, and interested troops are getting a free reader to use during the cookie drive.

We've been seeing the iPhone used as a payment system in quite a few places, but outside of the Apple Store this will likely be one of the biggest tests of the solution so far. Just remember: while it might sound nice to have a Thin Mint box or two right now, those things disappear fast once you actually start eating them. Use and consume at your own risk.

DirecTV announces remote control app coming soon to iPad
February 23, 2011 at 6:00 PM

We've had an iPhone app for DirecTV for quite a while now. It allows you to program your DVR directly from your smartphone, and it works well enough. Now, the satellite giant has announced an iPad app that will do the DVR programming, but also allow you to control your TV, customize the program guide, check sports scores and easily find programs you want to see.

With the extra real estate on the iPad screen, DirecTV can offer a much richer experience than the iPhone app, and from the preview on the DirecTV site, it looks like a great option for customers. Using the standard DirecTV remote to find programs is pretty painful, because navigating the onscreen keyboard involves lots of clicks and easy frustration.

There's no delivery date for the app, which will be free. DirecTV says it will be "soon." One catch: DirecTV says you'll need a certain receiver and remote to use some of the services, and it sounds like the connection will be made on a local Wi-Fi network. The fine print also suggests that "in rare instances, scheduled recordings may not be recognized," so the system may not be quite ready to completely depend on. Still, when you just want to make a few changes using a little better UI, the iPad app should serve. We'll keep an eye out for it.

Halftone iPhone app gives your photos that old-time newspaper look
February 23, 2011 at 5:00 PM

Halftone (currently US$0.99), a new iOS photo app from Juicy Bits Software, wants to be the app that turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a photographic time machine. Juicy Bits is the company that created the cool 3D Camera Studio for iPad ($3.99) and 3D Camera ($1.99) apps that provide a way to create 3D anaglyph, stereogram and "wigglegram" images.

A Short History of Halftones

Back in the ancient, pre-digital days, there used to be a way of consuming news, entertainment and sports content called "reading the newspaper." Whenever there was a major news event–the Kennedy assassination, the Apollo moon landings, and so forth–many people would grab the newspapers to stash them away for posterity.

Looking at old newspapers now, it's amazing how crude the photos look. The halftones used to print pictures, coupled with the sepia tone that the papers have taken on through aging, have a distinctive look that is associated with an era that began to disappear in the late 1970s and early 80s when digital imagesetters made their entrance. Wunderlist 1.2 for iPhone: landscape mode, new icon, push notifications, and more
February 23, 2011 at 3:30 PM

Wunderlist — the free task manager that can — got a pretty major update to v1.2 yesterday. I can confirm that push notifications are working, but you do have to remember to sync after setting a reminder or they won't work. I'm also digging the new icon and landscape support, and it's great to see [...]

Apple patent suggests Photo Booth for iOS
February 23, 2011 at 3:30 PM

<img align="right" alt="" border="0" height="250" hspace="8" src="http://www.blogcdn.com//media/2011/02/photo-booth-icon-2232011.jpg" vspace="8" width="250"/> <p> Patently Apple uncovered a new patent that describes an <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2011/02/an-apple-patent-gives-us-a-peek-at-photo-booth-for-ios-devices.html">iOS variant of the Photo Booth app</a> that may be under development for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The patent describes an image capture and effects system that can be triggered by external cues such as shaking your phone.</p> <p> A new setting for "Image Effects" is presented under the Wallpaper option that lets you turn on special effects for select camera applications. In addition to toggles for iPod video, the camera and the photo app, there are control options for audio, motion, location and camera data. There are several familiar Photo Booth settings, such as X-Ray, Glow and Thermal Effects, in these various sub-menus.</p> <p> The patent also describes a variety of audio, video and imaging effects that range from the complex waves and reflections down to the simple brush stroke and rotation. Taken as a whole, the patent seems to describe an image capturing application that automatically applies a variety of effects to your photos similar to the desktop Photo Booth application.</p> <p> Earlier this year, several circulating rumors suggested Photo Booth was coming to iOS. Apple patent suggests Photo Booth for iOS
February 23, 2011 at 3:30 PM

Patently Apple uncovered a new patent that describes an iOS variant of the Photo Booth app that may be under development for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The patent describes an image capture and effects system that can be triggered by external cues such as shaking your phone.

A new setting for "Image Effects" is presented under the Wallpaper option that lets you turn on special effects for select camera applications. In addition to toggles for iPod video, the camera and the photo app, there are control options for audio, motion, location and camera data. There are several familiar Photo Booth settings, such as X-Ray, Glow and Thermal Effects, in these various sub-menus.

The patent also describes a variety of audio, video and imaging effects that range from the complex waves and reflections down to the simple brush stroke and rotation. Taken as a whole, the patent seems to describe an image capturing application that automatically applies a variety of effects to your photos similar to the desktop Photo Booth application.

Earlier this year, several circulating rumors suggested Photo Booth was coming to iOS. An unknown source of BGR claimed to have knowledge of a Photo Booth application for the iPad as well as an iPad version of the iLife suite. Adding some credibility to this rumor was the discovery of several references to PhotoBooth and PhotoBoothEffects within the codebase of iOS 4.3.
