Start tracking data in Google Analytics
Add the tracking code to your site
If you haven't added the Analytics tracking code to your site, here's how easy it is:
- Go to your Analytics profile's Tracking Code page.
- Copy your tracking code from the text box in the 'instructions for adding tracking' section.
- Paste the snippet into every page you want to track, immediately before the </head> tag.
- If you use a common template you can enter it there.
Note: To install your tracking code, you'll need access to your web pages, basic HTML knowledge and the ability to upload the revised pages to your server. If you can't do these things, select 'email these instructions' to send the code to your webmaster.
Still not seeing data in your reports?
There are a few common reasons why you may not be seeing data in your reports even after adding the tracking code. Here's how to troubleshoot and fix them:
- Multiple accounts: If you have access to more than one Analytics account, you might just be looking at the wrong one. Log into Google Analytics and use the "My Accounts" drop-down menu at the top right corner of your Analytics account to choose the correct account.
- Tracking code error: Copying and pasting the tracking code sometimes adds an extra space or some other typo that breaks it. Try copying the code again and pasting it directly into the html, right before the < /head> tag, for every web page you want to track (if you use a common template, you can enter it there).
- New website: If your website is very new, there may simply be no traffic for Analytics to report. Once you begin promoting your site and receiving visitors, this traffic should start to show up in your Analytics reports.
- Code not added to every page: If only certain pages of your site have the tracking code, and those pages haven't received traffic, you won't see any data in your reports. Make sure you add the code to every page for which you want to gather data.
Finally, you might want to take a look at this quick Help Center article for more help troubleshooting common code installation errors.
